STORY

A Story Born from Love and Hope

I’ll admit—it’s hard for me to write this. Asking for help is never easy, especially in public. But when it comes to saving my mother’s life, pride must take a back seat. Today, I reach out with humility and hope, trusting that this effort will be worth it.
My mom was diagnosed with bile duct cancer, a rare and very aggressive disease. After two surgeries and several complications, her recovery has been a journey filled with faith, fear, and resilience. She is currently hospitalized at the Hospital Metropolitano in Quito, where she is receiving the care she needs to keep fighting.

We’re an ordinary family. My wife and I work tirelessly to keep our small business, URKU, alive—a brand born out of hard work, love for craftsmanship, and the connection between cultures. But right now, everything we earn goes toward trying to save a life.

What initially seemed like a $29,000 CAD expense has now risen—with new surgeries and extended hospitalization—to over $67,000 CAD (about $48,000 USD).

Of that total, we’ve managed to contribute , thanks to our own efforts and the generous donations of friends—whose solidarity and kindness we deeply appreciate—but a significant balance remains beyond our means.

Sadly, Ecuador’s public hospitals are overwhelmed. Many patients die waiting for care or medicine. That’s why we made the difficult decision to admit my mother to a private hospital, hoping she would receive the right treatment in time.

Despite the political and social turmoil the country is going through, and the recent uprisings that have affected many of the artisan families we work with, we keep moving forward with faith. We’ve helped others when we could—but today, it’s us who need a helping hand.

This Christmas—a season that usually brings hope—we continue working with our hearts focused on two goals: to keep my mother alive and to sustain URKU, so it can continue to grow and provide fair work for those who need it most.

Every contribution, every kind word, means more than you can imagine.
You’re not only helping to save a life—you’re also protecting a dream that was born to unite cultures and create opportunity.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your generosity and time.
Together, we can make a difference.

Thank you!
